Australia, 2006

These pictures are from a University of Redlands study-tour of central Australia, focused on Aboriginal communities.  Thirteen students, one recent graduate, Jim, and a co-teacher spent May, 2006 traveling from Adelaide to Darwin, learning about Aboriginal life.  We were joined by a French graduate student who is studying tourism.

We had a wonderful time.  The students had a great attitude, even after camping across a rather large continent in 20+ days.  Frankly, I've never had a better group of students.  We all learned a lot: about Aboriginal culture, about the Australian landscape, and about ourselves.

Not everything went quite as planned.  For one thing, a Category Five hurricane came barreling through Arnhem Land, flattening the village where we had planned to spend 5 of our last 7 days.  We found alternatives, but not all of them were as organized as we would have liked.  But we made do.

Thanks to the Wayward Bus for arranging the first half of our trip (Adelaide to Alice Spring, by way of the Yorke Peninsula, the Flinders Ranges, and Uluru), to Venture North for arranging the second half (Katherine to Darwin by way of Kakadu), and to Denise Goodfellow and her relatives for spending the last few days with us teaching us about Aboriginal life.
