{"id":2305,"date":"2018-03-31T21:54:35","date_gmt":"2018-03-31T21:54:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.coolsociology.net\/SOAN324WP\/?p=2305"},"modified":"2018-07-31T21:23:39","modified_gmt":"2018-07-31T21:23:39","slug":"you-never-know-you-never-know-anybodys-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.mcguire-spickard.com\/SOAN324WP\/?p=2305","title":{"rendered":"\u201cYou never know \u2014 you never know anybody\u2019s story&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The perspectives\u00a0of the homeless community is something that I have worked on to understand this semester.\u00a0 In a recent article published in the <em>New York Times,<\/em> Benjamin Weiser provides a perspective of a homeless women Nakesha Williams.\u00a0 Nakesha would reject when people would offer help like entering a shelter.\u00a0 Nakesha would accept any food, clothes, or toiletries that was offered.\u00a0 No one who knew Nakesha would have anticipated that she would become a member of the homeless community.\u00a0 She was Class President, Choir\u00a0singer, member of the school newspaper and National\u00a0Honor Society.\u00a0 \u00a0She even was third in her class and received her college tuition\u00a0covered by a scholarship.\u00a0 Nakesha faced challenges in her life that led her to wind up where she did.\u00a0 Her mother became ill with cancer.\u00a0 This led her to a number of odd jobs that left her moving a lot.\u00a0 Through this, she developed a sense of anxiety.\u00a0 Well in Los Angeles she would find places that offered free samples to eat and go to Churches that offered services.\u00a0 Throughout her life, she never once referred\u00a0to herself as homeless.\u00a0 In New York, she was a regular member of the homeless community that resided on the streets.\u00a0 She developed a relationship with members of the community that would stop and ask if she needed any help.\u00a0 Weiser comments on the fact that are 3,900 unsheltered homeless people in New York City. They reside in sleeping bags near building\/construction\u00a0sites, bury themselves in blankets, ponchos and cardboard boxes.
