I have required this internship for two reasons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First, I want you to encounter people in the situations that we are studying, and to do so in a safe and useful manner. Working with agencies attains this end.<\/li>\n<li>Second, I want you to observe a social service agency first-hand. I want you to\u00a0understand something of the agency\u2019s mission and its structure. I also want you so understand something about how agency staff view homelessness\/hunger as social\u00a0problems. And I want you to learn why they have chosen to do the particular work that they do.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Your learning will therefore have two foci:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First, you will observe the organization\u2019s clients, interacting with them as much as possible\u00a0in order to learn what life is like for them.<\/li>\n<li>Second, you will observe the organization itself, in order to get a sense of its mission and values, its interpretation of the problems of poverty, and of how effective it is at the work that it seeks to do.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Steps:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The key elements of this assignment are <em>(due dates are listed on the <a href=\"http:\/\/McGuire-Spickard.com\/SOAN324WP\/?page_id=27\">Schedule page<\/a>):<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>(turn in all of these assignments on Moodle)<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0<strong>Turn in a list of your top 5 choices for internships.<\/strong> \u00a0Consult <a title=\"Internship Ideas\" href=\"http:\/\/McGuire-Spickard.com\/SOAN324WP\/Handouts\/SOAN 324 Internship List updated Jan 19.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this list of local agencies<\/a>\u00a0to get ideas, or propose agencies with which you are already familiar.\u00a0 Once I have seen everyone&#8217;s requests, I shall let you know which agency or agencies you can pursue.\n<ul>\n<li>This is to make sure that no more than 2 students work at any one agency. \u00a0If you skip this step, your internship project does not count.<\/li>\n<li><em>Please notify me of any errors on this list, so I can correct them.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>As soon as possible, begin volunteering \/ observing at your internship site.\n<ul>\n<li>Based on this experience, turn in a short (2-3 page) report of what you expect to see and learn at this agency.\u00a0 This is the <strong>Preliminary\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Internship Report<\/strong>, due on the date listed on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coolsociology.net\/SOAN324WP\/?page_id=27\">Course Schedule<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>In all,\u00a0spend at least 20 hours volunteering\/observing at the agency. \u00a0Keep a log of your time there and of your observations. \u00a0<i>(You may wish to model this\u00a0<\/i><i>on the \u201cOn Fieldnotes\u201d handout, found elsewhere on this site.)<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You will make two reports to the class:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An <strong>Oral Progress Report<\/strong>\u00a0<a title=\"PechaKucha Presentations\" href=\"http:\/\/McGuire-Spickard.com\/SOAN324WP\/?page_id=86\">using the mini-PechaKucha presentation format<\/a>, focused on the organization&#8217;s mission and its methods of carrying out that mission.\n<ul>\n<li>Turn in a 4-5-page written report: this is the\u00a0<strong>Written Internship Progress Report<\/strong>, due on the date listed on the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/McGuire-Spickard.com\/SOAN324WP\/?page_id=27\">Course Schedule<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>An <strong>Oral Final Repor<\/strong>t to the class <a title=\"PechaKucha Presentations\" href=\"http:\/\/www.coolsociology.net\/SOAN324WP\/?page_id=86\">using the mini-PechaKucha presentation format<\/a>, focusing on the organization&#8217;s effectiveness .\n<ul>\n<li>Turn in a 7-8 page version of this report as well;\u00a0this is the <strong>Final<\/strong><strong>\u00a0Internship Report<\/strong>, due on the date listed on the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/McGuire-Spickard.com\/SOAN324WP\/?page_id=27\">Course Schedule<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Do NOT post about your organization on the Course Blog, unless you check with me first!<\/strong>\u00a0 This is for two reasons:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em>Your post is a public document.\u00a0 In our age, such documents have to be crafted very carefully to avoid being misconstrued or distorted and can cause harm.\u00a0 <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Your post could potentially harm people who have given you information by violating their privacy, threatening their job status, or threatening the aid organizations give them.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>If I do let you post about your organization, I shall ask you to do use a pseudonym (e.g.: &#8220;an unnamed religiously oriented homeless ministry&#8221;
