{"id":54,"date":"2013-11-25T21:39:30","date_gmt":"2013-11-25T21:39:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.coolsociology.net\/SOAN324WP\/?page_id=54"},"modified":"2024-04-07T23:48:56","modified_gmt":"2024-04-07T23:48:56","slug":"rules","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.mcguire-spickard.com\/SOAN324WP\/?page_id=54","title":{"rendered":"Expectations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"left\">In 30+ years of teaching, I\u2019ve learned a few things about how to make a class work. \u00a0Here is a summary of my expectations \u2014 things that we can all do that help us all learn:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Be considerate with technology:<\/strong>\n<ol>\n<li>Educational research shows that using computers to take notes reduces student learning. \u00a0<strong>I thus require you to take notes by hand, not by machine.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>For details, see <a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/blogs\/linguafranca\/2014\/08\/25\/why-im-asking-you-not-to-use-laptops\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HERE<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0360131512002254\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HERE<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/answer-sheet\/wp\/2014\/09\/25\/why-a-leading-professor-of-new-media-just-banned-technology-use-in-class\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HERE<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/a-learning-secret-don-t-take-notes-with-a-laptop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HERE<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>You can find a guide to the Cornell Method of note-taking <a href=\"https:\/\/lawyerist.com\/75163\/cornell-method-note-taking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HERE<\/a> and can download a PDF guide <a href=\"http:\/\/mcguire-spickard.com\/SOAN324WP\/Handouts\/Cornell-Note_Taking-System.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HERE<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Those with documented learning issues should see me.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>No cell phones, pagers, text-messengers, etc.\u00a0You may bring them to class, but unless you are a parent who may need to attend to children, deposit them in the basket at the front of the room before class starts.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0If you are a parent or have other special responsibilities, let me know beforehand.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Come to class on time.\u00a0<\/strong> If you wake up late, it\u2019s okay to come in your pajamas, eat your breakfast, or whatever.\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Just be here<\/span>, contributing and paying attention.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t leave before the end of class.\u00a0 <\/strong>You don\u2019t have to meet with other professors, register, answer phone calls, pee, etc. during class time.\u00a0 This class is your first priority during scheduled class hours.\u00a0 Please plan ahead.<em><strong> If you leave class early, don&#8217;t expect to return unless you have checked with me beforehand<\/strong><\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Written work should be turned in on Moodle at least 15 minutes before class.\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nAnything turned in after that is late.\u00a0 This is to let you get to class on time.<\/li>\n<li><b>Policy on Late Work<br \/>\n<\/b>\u00a0Work turned in late makes my life very difficult.\u00a0 It also robs your fellow students of your in-class contribution.\u00a0 There are, however, occasions when you have to make a choice.\u00a0<strong><em>There will, however, be consequences, as follows:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Most work is turned in on <a href=\"http:\/\/learn.redlands.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Moodle site<\/a> by the deadline marked there.\u00a0 This work is \u201con time\u201d.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Turn in this work using the Homework Dropbox folders. \u00a0See this site&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mcguire-spickard.com\/SOAN324WP\/?page_id=41\"><strong>Assignments page<\/strong><\/a> for details to see which ones qualify<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Some work is turned in on paper.\u00a0<\/strong> This work is &#8220;on time&#8221; if I receive it before 5 minutes after the start of class.<\/li>\n<li><strong>All other work is\u00a0late.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0This includes work that for which you have missed the Moodle deadline.\n<ul>\n<li>You may give me late work personally, or you may give it to the SOAN Secretary in the SOAN Department Office.\u00a0 If the latter, you must get it time-stamped. Otherwise I count it as &#8216;submitted&#8217; when we pick it up &#8212; sometimes a few days later.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t expect emailed work to be counted as &#8216;on time&#8217;.\u00a0 \u00a0I&#8217;m old enough to work best with paper copies.\u00a0 Humor me.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Late work loses 1\/3 grade for each 24 hour period after the time it is due.\u00a0 E.g.:\n<ul>\n<li>Work that I receive less than 24 hours after it is due is marked down 1\/3 grade.\u00a0 (A \u201c3.0\u201d becomes a \u201c2.7\u201d.)<\/li>\n<li>Work that I receive more than 24 hours but less than 48 hours after it is due is marked down 2\/3 grade.\u00a0 (A \u201c3.0\u201d becomes a \u201c2,3\u201d.)<\/li>\n<li>Etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>I make exceptions for parents and others who need special accommodations. \u00a0See me beforehand if this is the case.<\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Policy on Academic Honesty:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">The University has an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redlands.edu\/study\/schools-and-centers\/business\/student-services-and-resources\/policies-and-academic-standards\/academic-honesty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Academic Honesty Policy<\/a>, which you can find in the latest <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redlands.edu\/globalassets\/depts\/registrar\/catalogs\/documents\/downloadable-catalog-2018-2019\/university-of-redlands-catalog-2018-2019_print.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University Catalog<\/a>. \u00a0<\/span><em style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">(21ff\u00a0of the 2018-19 version)<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li>The short version: Do your own work, cite your sources, don\u2019t try to cut corners.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Details about how infractions are handled can be found at the\u00a0<\/span>University website<span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">.\u00a0 (You&#8217;ll have to hunt.\u00a0 They keep moving the page, which breaks all the links.)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Other University Policies:<br \/>\n<\/strong>Like many modern bureaucratic organizations, our university develops new policies at an astounding rate.\u00a0 This year (2018-2019), I received 4 major new student\/classroom policy documents in the week before classes began.\u00a0 That&#8217;s too many to include in a syllabus.\u00a0\u00a0<em>(The world needs\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">more<\/span> trees.)<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Please check the Policy section of the <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.redlands.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Moodle site<\/a> for this course.\u00a0 I shall post the most important policies for your perusal.<\/li>\n<li>Please review the University&#8217;s own website for policies and policy changes.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/sites.redlands.edu\/provost\/student-conduct-complaints\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">This page<\/a> seems to be reasonably complete &#8212; but no guarantees.\u00a0 You can often find policies at <a href=\"http:\/\/my.redlands.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MyRedlands<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Commitment to Universal Learning:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">I am committed to the principle of universal learning. This means that our classroom, our virtual spaces, our practices, and our interactions should be as inclusive as possible. \u00a0Mutual respect, civility, and the ability to listen and observe others carefully are crucial to universal learning.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Any student with particular needs should contact the University\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.redlands.edu\/student-affairs\/academic-success-and-disability-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Academic Success and Disability Services Center<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">\u00a0at\u00a0the start of the semester.
