{"id":210,"date":"2013-11-30T16:00:46","date_gmt":"2013-11-30T16:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.coolsociology.net\/SOAN324WP\/?page_id=210"},"modified":"2024-04-07T23:22:52","modified_gmt":"2024-04-07T23:22:52","slug":"how-i-grade-course-participation","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.mcguire-spickard.com\/SOAN324WP\/?page_id=210","title":{"rendered":"How I Grade Course Participation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As you&#8217;ve noticed from elsewhere on this website, this course uses an unusual instructional model. \u00a0The course is based on an\u00a0<a title=\"Pedagogy vs Andragogy\" href=\"http:\/\/McGuire-Spickard.com\/SOAN324WP\/?page_id=109\">androgogical rather than a\u00a0pedagogical<\/a>\u00a0model<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In child-style learning, the teacher is responsible for everyone&#8217;s learning.<\/li>\n<li>In adult-style learning, the student is responsible for making sure that everyone else in the group learns too.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I&#8217;m not passing responsibility to you; I&#8217;m sharing it.\u00a0 That&#8217;s what adult learning is all about &#8212; and you&#8217;ll be doing it the rest of your lives.\u00a0 As a result, shouldering your responsibility for the success of this course constitutes\u00a0<strong>20% of your grade<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>What does this mean, in practice?\u00a0 I&#8217;ll be looking for the following things:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Your presence, both physically and mentally in the classroom.\u00a0 This means full participation in discussions, etc. &#8212; the stuff that gives you a good participation grade in a normal course.<\/li>\n<li>Your intellectual leadership, esp. the degree to which you bring organization and energy to our projects and to your group presentations, new information and new ideas to class, and provide a sense of direction to our efforts.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>NB: So that I&#8217;m not just rewarding extroverts, this can also include conversations with me outside of class about the course direction and the topics we are covering.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Your attention to others&#8217; learning, and your active efforts to make sure that others in the group benefit from the course.\u00a0 This might include your direct interventions, but it also might include conversations with me outside of class.<\/li>\n<li>The depth and quality of your \u00a0comments on <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">other students&#8217;<\/span>\u00a0<a title=\"Blog Posts\" href=\"http:\/\/McGuire-Spickard.com\/SOAN324WP\/?page_id=115\">blog posts<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The amount and quality of the data that you bring to our various <a title=\"Data Exercises\" href=\"http:\/\/McGuire-Spickard.com\/SOAN324WP\/?page_id=142\">collaborative data exercises<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>These matters are not mutually exclusive, of course.\u00a0 But they give you an idea of the kinds of things that I&#8217;ll be thinking about as I evaluate your work.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; JS<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As you&#8217;ve noticed from elsewhere on this website, this course uses an unusual instructional model. \u00a0The course is based on an\u00a0androgogical rather than a\u00a0pedagogical\u00a0model In child-style learning, the teacher is responsible for everyone&#8217;s learning.
