{"id":142,"date":"2013-11-26T11:44:03","date_gmt":"2013-11-26T11:44:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.coolsociology.net\/SOAN324WP\/?page_id=142"},"modified":"2024-04-07T23:23:30","modified_gmt":"2024-04-07T23:23:30","slug":"data-exercises","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.mcguire-spickard.com\/SOAN324WP\/?page_id=142","title":{"rendered":"Data Exercises"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We will have three special data exercises this semester.\u00a0 Each exercise focuses on a particular aspect of poverty and homelessness.\u00a0 Each calls for teamwork as we solve a problem together.\u00a0 The point of these exercises is <strong>not<\/strong> to come up with easy answers.\u00a0 The point is for each team or team member to locate data that others might not find.\u00a0\u00a0 In class, we will then put all this data together to solve the problem we&#8217;ve posed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The three exercises \u00a0are:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Due dates are listed on the <a href=\"http:\/\/McGuire-Spickard.com\/SOAN324WP\/?page_id=27\">Schedule page.<\/a><br \/>\nTurn the exercise write-ups in on Moodle AND bring a copy to class.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>1. How much does it cost to live in the Redlands \/ San Bernardino area?<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">Imagine you are a single parent of a 2-year-old and a 5-year-old, working at a minimum-wage job.\u00a0 How much do you have to spend to keep your family housed?\u00a0 What resources do you have available?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><em><strong>We will divide the labor of finding out and produce some answers.\u00a0 Your assignment will be to investigate some segment of the budget and report what you found to the class.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">Then we&#8217;ll ask:<br \/>\n&#8212; What if that job becomes part-time?<br \/>\n&#8212; What if someone becomes sick?<br \/>\n&#8212; What if there is a transit strike, or if one&#8217;s car dies?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>2. How have local homelessness counts been carried out?\u00a0 Which ones are the most accurate?\u00a0 Which are likely to have undercounted the homeless, and by how much?<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">We will locate the last several years of Continuum-of-Care homeless counts in California, examining their methods and results.\u00a0 We will figure out how to adjust the poorly designed counts to come up with a more realistic figure for the number of homeless in our region.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><em><strong>Your assignment is to locate and summarize one county&#8217;s count.\u00a0 You should identify the counting method and describe its strengths and weaknesses.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>3.
